About the Honors
The Games Women Play: Women at the Top of the Game Honors amplifies and celebrates the indomitable spirit of women of color. These women display an admirable amount of courage and perseverance in their ability to drive positive change. They have made exceptional contributions and achievements in leadership in their spheres of influence to leave indelible marks on society. They lay the foundation for future generations of young women and girls to grow and have the opportunities that allow them to step onto the paths of their destinies. Support of this multi-purpose, multi-cause-related event unites us in a spirit of camaraderie to honor amazing women and support worthy causes empowering, inspiring, and equipping girls and young women.
Charity
The Honors provides support to America's Time Out for Youth, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization. America's Time Out for Youth mission is to empower girls with resources, opportunities and positive experiences, inspire them to be healthy, confident, strong and wise; and equip them to navigate physical, emotional, economic and social barriers to achieve optimal well-being and positive change to make their lives and the world better. Also, as October is Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence Awareness month, the Honors program will also acknowledge our quest to bring awareness of the prevention and eradication of these two causes.
The Honors History
Upon her retirement from Corporate America in 1994 to become a full-time entrepreneur, Gloria D. Daniels created the Games Women Play Honors as her marketing agency's first signature event to specifically acknowledge and celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments of women of color in sports. Through the years, other exceptional women of color who are pioneers in their respective fields of influence were included and celebrated along with the many sports icons, legends, Olympians, and Hall of Fame athletes. This inclusion led to the addition of the title Women at the Top of the Game to Games Women Play. The inaugural Games Women Play award was designed by renowned sculptor and astronaut Ed Dwight.
The more than one hundred women honored to date have included multiple award-winning performing artists recognized with NAACP Image, Grammy, Dove, and Stellar awards. Through collective influence, these women at the top of the game have challenged the status quo, championed causes, and paved the way for a more inclusive and equitable society. Naming just a few of our past honorees: Wilma Rudolph, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Renee Powell, LPGA and PGA golf professional and 12x Golf Hall of Famer, and Sharon Robinson (Jackie’s daughter), educational consultant for Major League Baseball, Alice Coachman, the first Black woman from any county to win an Olympic Gold Medal, and Sheryl Swoopes, the first player signed to the WNBA, a 4x WNBA Champion, 3x Olympic Gold Medalist and Naismith Hall of Famer.
A few more past honorees include Patti LaBelle, Grammy and Hollywood Hall of Fame artist, and Albertina Walker, Gospel Music Hall of Fame, Grammy, Stellar, and Dove awardee, United Airlines Pilot Captain Melissa Ward, who made history as the first African American female aviation captain to pilot for a major U.S. commercial airline, and honorees named to the Time 100 most influential people in the world and included on Forbes list of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women. Each honoree has represented the epitome of success and leadership. The tradition continues with the selection of our 2024 nominees and honorees.
